Facilities and Services

Janelia Farm's state-of-the-art laboratory facilities, beautifully designed conference and visitor housing, and array of personal services and amenities create a collegial environment for groundbreaking, interdisciplinary research. Whether working in the lab or relaxing in the pub, staff and visitors alike will experience an atmosphere that encourages teamwork and innovation.

  • CONFERENCE AND VISITOR HOUSING

    Janelia Farm provides short-term housing for conference attendees and long-term housing for visiting scientists working on campus. Both types of housing create a sense of community.

    The two-story building for conference housing lies close to the Landscape Building. Its 96 rooms can accommodate visitors who come to Janelia Farm for scientific presentations and meetings.

    Twenty-one studio apartments serve shorter-term single visitors. Twenty-six two-bedroom apartments can house two persons or a small family. Four three-bedroom units with accessible facilities can serve larger families, groups of individuals, or those with special needs. In addition, two four-bedroom units can serve graduate students or postdoctoral fellows.

    The buildings for visitor housing fit into the existing trees and topography. The center of the site is reserved for pedestrian access and open space. The studio units have an adjacent social facility for group gatherings, which serves both the studio units and the apartment units. Parking is located off a one-way loop road at the periphery of the housing site.

  • SERVICES AND AMENITIES

    Janelia Farm employees and their families enjoy a variety of personal services and amenities, including child care, a fitness center, on-site car service and dry cleaning, social activities, and relocation assistance.

    Child Care

    To make it easier for employees to juggle child care and work responsibilities, a professional, accredited childcare provider offers high-quality on-site childcare for infants through school-age children.

    Dining

    Janelia Farm's dining facilities include the Dining Room, where lunch is served, and the Pub, open for continental breakfast, midafternoon snacks, and light evening meals. Both facilities support Janelia Farm research mission by providing relaxed settings for conversation, interaction, and collaboration.

    Fitness Center

    An on-site fitness center offers fitness classes and training assistance. In addition, Janelia Farm has running trails, basketball courts, tennis courts, and a soccer field.

    Relocation Information

    To assist employees who are relocating to the Janelia Farm area, information about housing, schools and related resources is available on-site.

    Social Activities

    We hold social events that encourage family participation in the evenings and on weekends. These social programs include films, game nights, theme dinners, and picnics, in addition to local and private group events.

    Additional Services

    Employees at Janelia Farm have access to transportation services including commuter shuttles, local county transportation, and access to two Zipcars, reserved exclusively for JFRC use. Additional amenities are also provided, such as an ATM and postal services.
